Some jobs demand a specific degree subject (especially in the fields of science and engineering). However, many vacancies advertised ask for graduates from any degree subject.
Graduates can do almost anything
In addition to the specialist knowledge a degree provides, the process of studying for a degree and the wider university experience (living away from home, managing finances, part-time work, extra curricular activities e.g. taking part in clubs and societies) gives graduates skills that are useful for any career (e.g. analytical skills, problem solving skills, team working skills).
The ability to recognise, offer and use these 'transferable' skills means that many graduates end up in careers not related to their degrees.
Where have NZ graduates found work?
The New Zealand Vice Chancellors' Committee has been conducting a national survey of graduates to find out what they are doing six months after graduation. The results are published as a series of survey reports (see especially NZUniGradStats, NZUniGradReport, NZUniPostGradReport), and as a subject listing. The name of your major may not correspond exactly to the subject name used in the survey, so check a few alternatives. The pages mentioned below also link you to the most relevant survey pages for your faculty. Please note: as at 24 September 2008, some of the content mentioned in the paragraph above is unavailable while the NZVCC website is being redesigned.
