Engineering Science

The Department of Engineering Science is a vibrant department which carries out research and teaching where engineering, mathematics and computers meet. By using mathematical equations and models together with computer software and considerable computer power, Engineering Scientists can simulate many different processes and provide useful solutions relevant to the real world.

The department was rated one of the top ten departments in New Zealand in the most recent Performance Based Research Funding (PBRF) evaluation of research quality.

  • Biomedical Engineering, including orthopaedic design, ventricular mechanics, bioinstrumentation, electrocardiagraphic modelling, biological transport phenomena and the modelling of genetic networks
  • Fluid Dynamics, including petroleum engineering, aero-acoustics, environmental fluid mechanics, nano fluidics, flow in porous media and hydrodynamics
  • Operations Research, including mathematical programming, production planning, simulation, network optimisation and combinatorial optimization
  • Signal Processing, including signal analysis, nonlinear dynamical systems, artificial neural networks, wavelets, independent component analysis
  • Solid Mechanics, including the thermomechanical foundations of solid mechanics, geomechanics, computational mechanics, composite and fibrous materials.

The department is very keen to welcome intern students from the Indian Institutes of Technology with an interest in mathematics and computing to help us with our research.
