About the James Henare Maori Research Centre

A research centre focused on providing excellent research to Māori communities in Tai Tokerau.

The James Henare Māori Research Centre was established in 1993 in response to appeals from representatives of the Māori people of the Tai Tokerau (Northland) region to the University of Auckland to address their research needs. The challenge then became one of setting up a research centre that would focus and coordinate the intellectual resources of the University on issues relevant to Tai Tokerau needs.

The Centre was named in honour of the late James Clendon Tau Henare, an eminent Māori leader and scholar.

Centre aims

The Centre aims to empower Maori communities in Taitokerau through research. It further aims to be the leading organization to carry out research concerning the social, cultural and economic well-being and advancement of Taitokerau people.

Research results are provided to source communities with the aim to apply and implement research findings. Technical reports, publications and conference presentations are other ways for disseminating research results. See below for a list of major work carried out by the Centre between 1993-2008.

Community co-researchers are also often integral to the success of projects and co-opted. Researchers have included:
